Reverse House, Preston
Strategic transformation creating a generous, refined and timeless family home.
In construction…
A carefully considered transformation of a family home, Preston House reimagines the existing footprint through a series of strategic interventions. Flipping the backyard to the front to capture northern light as well as introduce indoor outdoor spaces off the primary living spaces.
Selective removal of internal walls opens the plan, creating a generous and light-filled living environment that better supports contemporary family life. Targeted extensions introduce additional bedrooms, ensuite, and an expanded open plan living zone, allowing the home to evolve without losing its original character.
The new works adopt a contemporary architectural language, while remaining closely tied to the materiality and scale of the existing dwelling. A carefully considered external palette introduces soft green tones that blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscaping, allowing the home to sit gently within its setting.
Internally, the home is defined by a refined and timeless palette, where each element has been thoughtfully detailed. From the stone selections and junctions through to the profile of the cornices, every decision contributes to a cohesive and resolved outcome. Spaces are designed not just for function, but for everyday enjoyment. The island bench anchors the kitchen as a place for gathering and entertaining, while more intimate moments are created through a window seat overlooking the garden and a series of connected indoor and outdoor zones, including a firepit area.
A key move in the project is the rethinking of the front yard. Through strategic landscaping, this space is transformed into a private and usable outdoor area, effectively acting as an extension of the backyard. Layered planting and considered screening provide privacy, allowing the home to open outward while maintaining a sense of retreat.
The result is a balanced family home that feels both generous and grounded, with spaces designed to support daily life over the long term.
