Bayside Modern

Light filled extension shaped by northern sun and refined detailing

Commencing construction soon…

Bayside Modern reimagines a traditional brick veneer home in Cheltenham through a carefully balanced approach of renovation and extension.

The original streetscape is retained and enhanced, with strategic internal updates improving functionality while respecting the character of the existing home. Concealed behind the existing facade is a contemporary rear addition, introducing a new layer of living spaces and amenity.

The extension is shaped by light. With northern orientation toward the street, the design captures this aspect through vaulted ceilings, skylights, and clerestory glazing. Large expanses of glazing open the home to the garden, creating a strong indoor outdoor connection and a series of light filled, generous living spaces.

The result is a family home comprising four bedrooms, a master suite, two separate living areas, and an expansive open plan kitchen, dining and living zone. The plan supports both everyday family life and moments of retreat, with a clear hierarchy of spaces.

Internally, the material palette is refined and tactile. Feature stone anchors key elements such as the kitchen, expressed through sculpted forms and softened edges. Natural timbers and textured finishes add warmth and depth, creating a calm and cohesive interior environment. Cabinetry is carefully integrated to support daily rituals, including a dedicated space for the family’s cat to nestle within, positioned to enjoy views toward the fireplace.

The fireplace itself is conceived as a central element within the home, designed to be experienced from multiple vantage points across the kitchen, dining, and lounge. This allows it to act as both a visual anchor and a source of warmth, connecting the primary living spaces.

Externally, the architecture adopts a clean and robust language, designed for longevity and low maintenance. Elements such as the continuous window seating are carefully detailed to achieve a clean minimal feel, concealing structure, insulation, and waterproofing within a resolved architectural form.

A defining aspect of the project is its staged construction approach, allowing the clients to remain living in the home throughout the build. This required careful planning and documentation to ensure a seamless transition between old and new.

With construction drawings complete, Bayside Modern is poised to move on site, marking the next phase in the evolution of this considered family home.
